太極拳と haiku

無心を目指す俳人もかなりいるようである。
とらわれが無い、こだわらない。
禅につながるものがあるのではないだろうか。

座禅に対して、動禅とも云われる太極拳。
２０数年、太極拳をやっているが、太極拳を
林の中でやった後、haiku が時々生まれること
がある。

「英語俳句クラブ講座」

小田原で１１月に行われた英語俳句クラブ講座の
中から haiku prose をご紹介してみましょう。

I'm afraid that quite a few English teachers
tend to believe that haiku in any language
should have 5-7-5 syllable counts. However,
that isn't true, 5-7-5 syllable counts are
for Japanese language haiku, not for English
language haiku.

かなりの英語の先生が、俳句は何語であろうと
5-7-5 でなくてはと考える傾向があるのでは
ないかと、私には思われる。しかし、それは
間違いである。 5-7-5 は日本語俳句であって、
英語俳句のものではない。

Some scholars of haiku say that 2-3-2 syllable
counts are more appropriate for English
language haiku. They believe this from the
viewpoint of the amount of information which
each haiku should have.

You can compare the amount of information in
some haiku verses shown below:

英語俳句の研究者の中には、２-３-２の方が
もっと英語俳句には、ふさわしいという人たちも
いる。個々の俳句の情報の量という点から見て、
その研究者たちは、そのような考えに立つのである。

次に示す幾つかの句で情報量を比較してみよう。

The first one, originally written in Japanese
5-7-5 syllables by Basho, has four *asterisks.
With this mark I want to show each amount of
information. The second one, written by me, has
nine asterisks.

最初の句のオリジナルは、芭蕉が日本語の 5-7-5 で
書いたものであり、アステリスク・マーク（asterisk）
が４個ついている。　このマークで、私は情報の量を
示したいと思う。　二つ目の句は、私の句でアステリ
スク・マークが９個ついている。

Around the time when I wrote this haiku and the
fourth haiku, I was trying to write each haiku
in the 5-7-5 syllable pattern. Probably it's
easy for you to tell the second and fourth haiku
of mine have more asterisks than the first and
third haiku which was also originally written
in the Japanese 5-7-5 syllable pattern.

私がこの句と四つ目の句を書いた頃は、それぞれの
英語俳句を 5-7-5 で書こうとしていた。たぶん、容易
にお分かりだろうが、二つ目と四つ目の私の句は、
最初の句と三つ目の句よりも沢山のアステリスク・
マークがついている。三つ目の句もオリジナルは、
日本語の 5-7-5 で書かれたものである。

The haiku verses, from the fifth to the
eleventh, were written by me recently with
less syllables, -- as few as a 2-3-2 syllable
count; and the last one is L.A. Davidson's.

I think I can reduce the amount of information
of each haiku down to the amount of informa-
tion of Japanese haiku.

五つ目から十一番目までの句は、最近、私が書いた
もので ２-３-２ くらいの少ない音節で書いたもの
である。最後の句は、アグネス・デビッドソンの
ものである。

私は、それぞれの ハイクの情報量を日本語俳句の
情報量まで少なくすることができると思っている。
